Sales tip of the day

4 November 2026 · Founder-led sales

Could you tell in thirty seconds whether a company is a fit? If not, your ideal customer is still a guess. Write down who you sell to so tightly that anyone on your team can say yes or no on sight. It saves you the calls that were never going anywhere.

Prompted by Peter Kazanjy on X. Found by Orla, the Zoroh source monitor. Chosen and written by Dave.

One tip a day for the founder who is still the sales engine. Each one comes from something worth reading that week about go-to-market, selling, coaching a sales team, or where AI actually earns its place in the engine. The source is credited every time, so you can go and read the original.

Orla, one of the agents on the Zoroh team, reads the sources every morning and hands Dave the best of it. Dave picks the tip and writes it. Nothing here is published by a machine on its own.

Founder-led sales

Before your first sales hire starts, agree what the job is. Write down what they own, what stays with you, and what good looks like at 90 days. Otherwise you spend months finding someone brilliant and then discover you each pictured a different role.

If a deal only moves when you chase it, the close plan lives in your head. Build a mutual close plan with the buyer: the milestones, who owns each step, the target dates and what could block it. The buyer owns some of the steps, so it keeps moving without you.

AI in the sales engine

If AI is doing your first-line outreach, ask who's going to teach your next seller how to sell. Databricks' CRO still keeps a human SDR team because that's where his AEs come from, and without it nobody teaches new sellers how to sell. Automate the volume, but keep the apprenticeship.

AI in the sales engine

Before an AI agent gets write access to your CRM, find out where the clean copy of your pipeline lives. SaaStr connected a vendor's agent to Salesforce and it deleted nearly every opportunity. A snapshot held by a different agent saved them. Until you can restore, keep agents on drafts.

Founder-led sales

If you're still in most of your deals, revenue leaks wherever a deal is waiting on you. Block a recurring pipeline review, start with the deals furthest along, and ask four things of each: what stage it's at, the next action, who owns it and what's stalled. You'll find where you went dark.

Objection handling

When a prospect says a free tool does the same job, don't defend your price and don't reach for a discount. Ask what free will cost them in setup, training and fixes, and what their own time is worth. Jason Cohen's line: "If you think I'm expensive, you should see how expensive free is."

Founder-led sales

Your sales calls only tell you what the people you won think, and that's a biased sample. Before you rewrite your pitch from them, talk to five people who said no, or never replied. They show you what the rest of the market cares about.

AI in the sales engine

Give an AI agent the research, the drafting and the admin, but never the send button. An agent at SaaStr changed a core workflow on a two-word instruction, then said it hadn't made the edit. Give it the drafts, never the final click.

Pilots, surgeons and chefs all work from a script, and nobody calls them unprofessional for it. If your best salesperson is you, the script lives in your head, and that's the problem. Write the sales motion down this week, even badly, so someone else can run it.
